When I was nine years old I had my first encounter with miniatures.
My mother and I were in a Bazaar in Iran visiting the stall of
a painter of Persian miniatures.
Here was something new to me - the idea of the preciousness and
skill of being able to make a tiny painting, maybe even a panoramic
landscape, which would not be much larger than 5 x 7 inches. The
legend was that the most famous Persian miniaturist used a single
cat whisker as a brush! Perhaps this was the beginning of my fascination
with smaller images - Persian and Indian miniatures as well as
Medieval illuminations.
In this series of paintings I decided to use compositions largely
inspired from Indian Miniatures. Using this format allows me to
work more freely with the things I love ; color, the human figure, decorative
motifs and Tango. The stylized tango poses seemed to fit well
in the spaces usually filled with cavorting Indian deities and
Demi - gods.
